So that was what started us on a chocolate unit study journey with extension into a chocolate workshop where we then read the book too.
I came across the Pop-Up version recently and I was totally sold! I decided to buy it for Dumpling and this is her first pop-up book. And boy, was it a right choice!
:: Illustrations
The illustrations are the true originals by Quentin Blake. What this version added on was the clever use of cutouts for the popups and usage of special materials and embossing techniques. These made the characters more 3D and the story interesting.
I was also particularly impressed with the pop up from the last 2 pages where the Glass Elevator 'shot' out from the pages as we flipped them. Dumpling went "Wow" and "Wow" it was.
:: Storyline
This is, of course, an abridged version of the original story but the beauty is that the main gist of the tale is captured. The storyline is kept straight to the point with the introduction of Charlie Bucket, a boy who loves chocolate. And, Mr. Willy Wonker, the most wondrous inventor in the world, who decided to open the gates of his factory to five lucky winners!
Along the way are the hilarious tales of how each winner meets his/her 'end' which are of course, accompanied by the Oompa Loompas' songs. Entertaining, funny and certainly a beautiful book. This is definitely a keeper and would be great as a gift! Here's a video clip to share

While a 'pop-up' book does just that - pops up from the book, what I really like are the interactive parts of the title. There are fold out flaps...
and pull out flaps which also feature the Oompa Loompas' Songs on the various golden ticket winners.
Best of all, we even have our very own GOLDEN TICKET! How cool is that? :D

Wow the book looks so impressive! I love how Charlie and his family are so humble, and poor yet happy
ReplyDeleteRoald dahl was my all time childhood favourite and I'm glad my kids share my interest. Having read aloud the (plain, black and white) version of this book twice, it will be great if we can get a colored illustration edition and the pop up is a bonus!
ReplyDeleteThey should do it for other roald Dahl books!!
Hope to win :)

This was one of my favourite stories as a child and my introduction to the wonderful world of Dahl. I recently told it to Poppy from (very poor) memory and we were both captivated by the film. I absolutely love Dahl's creativity and wit. This is probably one of the best Dahl books ever written! What joy it must be to win that golden ticket! Though if it means I have to share a bed with 3 other oldies and eat cabbage soup everyday, erm.... Maybe not :)
ReplyDeleteMe, me! adora.tan.richer@gmail.com
I have never actually read this book, but this version looks very fun!
ReplyDeleteI read this book when I was a teenager. I remember there were loads of things that are in the story that just wouldn't happen in real life but we all hope they will. I vadely remember there was this part which ice cream/chocolate doesn't melt (hope I remember correctly). I had never watched the movie, and this pop-up book certainly add more "life" to reading the original book, and a good one to introduce Roald Dahl to my kids. Your review comment that this pop-up book being an abridged version of the original story still managed to capture the main gist of the tale certainly attract me to want to read it.

I enjoyed watching the movie staring Johnny Depp. Such a great storyline and I love pop up books! They're so fun and interactive for the kids and I'm sure Kaitlin would love it.
ReplyDeleteHuge fan of Roald Dahl and dd has been read the book to so she is enthralled by the story. I saw a build it yourself version of this, but all those small pieces that you have to pop out and fold and match the numbers... gave me a headache. This pop up book seems totally awesome and interactive, and no hair pulling involved!
ReplyDeletenice book.
ReplyDeleteThe Oompaloomas!
ReplyDeleteWell... it's all about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... that's reason enough to love it. :) The fact that it's a pop-up makes it even more awesome!!!

The pop-up looks more interesting and will be able to capture my boy's attention.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favourite stories when I was in primary school! I was first attracted by the idea of a chocolate factory, then later I grew to appreciate the lessons learnt from the story. It teaches the importance of reading and values children should possess as exemplified by Charlie and attitudes that should be avoided as shown by Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teavee.
ReplyDeleteAwesome book
ReplyDeleteMy gal likes chocolates and will be thrilled to see this book! Thanks

MS was recently just asking to visit Charlie and the Chocolate factory again in UK, unfortunately we won't be back to UK till end of next year. So it would be great if we win this book and give it to her for Xmas pressie. With the pop up version, this would definitely make her feel like she's "walking" through the adventure again!
