ITheatre's Grimm's Fairy Tales

We are big fans of fairy tales. Since young, I have been reading loads of them  with Dumpling and when she started reading independently, she'd bury her nose in them.

We attended ITheatre's Grimm's Fairy Tales over the weekend and I was pleasantly surprised with it being a full scale musical. The hubs also attended and commented that the stories were very cleverly woven together with the inclusion of some animals who were the narrators of the tales.

Grimm's Fairy Tales covered eight stories (yes, eight!) where some are kept short and simple while some are a bit more elaborate.

Told by the eight animals who were 'competing' to have the best tale, came the stories of The Musicians of Bremen, The Valiant Little Tailor, The Turnip, Rumpelstiltskin, The Fox and the Geese, Little Cap, Rapunzel, Lucky Hans & Hansel and Gretel.

Amongst the tales told, Dumpling enjoyed Rumpelstiltskin and Rapunzel most. Both stories used puppets and were amongst the lengthier tales told. The main song in Rumpelstiltskin was catchy as the little creature sung and danced his way through while spinning the straw. At one point, I could see Dumpling grooving to the song too. Rapunzel was told with hand puppets and though it was kept short, it had a funny ending (photos not shown here).

As with all fairy tales, there's always a moral behind them and with Little Cap, the need to "stick to the path" was emphasized. Jonathan Lum was definitely convincing as the wolf without being overly scary which was great for the younger kids.

As for me, I personally like The Valiant Little Tailor - it was witty and engaging and I found myself laughing out loud a few times at the tailor's 'luck', his antics and his story of "7 in a stroke". :)

I managed to bump into had a quick chat with Brian Seward before the play started. He shared that this play is targeted at the slightly older children and it would seem so. The production was about 90 mins long with a 15mins interval so it is unlike productions such as The Enormous Turnip / The Magic Porridge Pot where those were centered on one story and did not have any intermission.

If you have no plans as yet for the coming weekend or the next, I'd say have a go at this musical with your kiddos!
